Google Earth Engine (GEE) is Google's cloud platform for planetary-scale geospatial analysis of Earth observation data. It combines a public catalog of satellite imagery and scientific datasets exceeding 80 petabytes and more than 40 years of historical data with Google's cloud computing power, letting users detect change, map trends, and quantify differences on the Earth's surface.
The catalog includes the full Landsat archive, Sentinel-1/2, MODIS, NAIP, precipitation (CHIRPS), temperature, and climate and weather models. Users work through an interactive web-based Code Editor and APIs in JavaScript and Python (the ee package), as well as a REST API.
The platform integrates with the Google Cloud ecosystem — BigQuery, Cloud Storage, and Vertex AI — and offers built-in ML classifiers (ee.Classifier) plus the Google Earth AI collection of geospatial models and datasets. WeatherNext (Google DeepMind) weather forecasts are available directly in the Earth Engine catalog.
Launched in 2010 and long free for science and research, it has been commercially available since 2021 as a Google Cloud product with paid plans billed in EECU compute units. It is used for environmental monitoring, agriculture, forestry, water-resource management, disaster response, and climate research.
