Description

The Intent Intelligence Framework is an approach (a suite of services and APIs) published by American Express for capturing, authenticating, and preserving a user's confirmed purchase intent before an AI agent transacts on their behalf in agentic commerce.

Intent represents purchase instructions and constraints such as maximum amount, merchant preference, time limits, and fulfillment conditions. Once the user confirms the intent and selects a payment instrument, an Intent ID and a Proof of Intent Token are issued (the token is a JSON Web Token representing the high-level constraints of the intent).

The framework includes the Create Intent API, intent authentication (e.g., via Passkey), and ecosystem roles: agent, vault provider, digital wallet, and issuer / payment network. It is made publicly available through the Agentic Commerce Experiences (ACE) Developer Kit. Its goal is to reduce disputes and chargebacks and to build trust in agent-executed transactions.
