ChatGPT Chat is the conversational face of ChatGPT, separated out by OpenAI in 2026 as a distinct mode alongside the agentic ChatGPT Work. It is the consumer-facing version: the traditional chat window with its "Message ChatGPT" field, meant for queries that resolve within the exchange itself rather than across a multi-hour project.
The Chat/Work split is not merely an interface matter — it extends to billing. ChatGPT Work sessions are billed against your Codex allowance, while ChatGPT Chat sessions get their own, separate allowance. In practice this means heavy agentic work does not consume the quota set aside for ordinary conversation, and vice versa.
