ChatGPT Mil is a military version of ChatGPT deployed by OpenAI on GenAI.mil — the U.S. Department of War's secure, enterprise generative AI platform. Launched on 31 August 2026, it marks the adoption phase of an enterprise partnership established between the Department and OpenAI in 2025.
The system is accredited to handle Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) at Impact Level 5 (IL5) and runs in authorized government cloud infrastructure. Data processed on GenAI.mil stays isolated within the government environment and is not used to train OpenAI's public or commercial models.
The core experience centers on chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs. ChatGPT Mil supports document-heavy unclassified work — planning, policy, logistics, and administration — including summarizing and analyzing documents, drafting procurement and contracting materials, and generating reports and compliance checklists.
It is built for scale to support more than 3 million Department personnel. The deployment is led by the Chief Digital and AI Office (CDAO) and the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering, and supports the government AI Action Plan.
