The teacher is expressly responsible for obtaining parental/guardian consent for processing student data when entering PII into conversations. Anthropic provides tools (deletion on request within a defined SLA), but the obligation to obtain consent rests with the teacher/school. Educator verification does not cover verification of school privacy-policy compliance - that is the school administration's responsibility. Infrastructure security level identical to Claude.ai Pro/Team: SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, TLS 1.3, AES-256 at rest. No dedicated SSO/SCIM in the Teachers tier - that will come in the upcoming schools/districts offering.

Claude for Teachers

Claude for Teachers (formally Claude for K-12 Teachers) is Anthropic's dedicated program for US elementary and secondary teachers, launched in November 2025. It is Anthropic's first step into K-12 education after the success of Claude for Higher Education (2024). Verified teachers receive free access to premium Claude features - equivalent to the Pro plan - at no cost. The program is open for sign-ups until June 30, 2027, with a full year of free access. Verification via claude.ai/teachers requires confirmation of employment at a K-12 school (public, private, or charter).

Three pillars of value for the teacher: (1) Skills for teaching workflows - built-in specialised skills: lesson planning, differentiation, quiz generation, misconception surfacing. Teachers can also create their own Skills (e.g. their own rubric format), which Claude will apply consistently. (2) Connectors to educational resources - flagship Learning Commons Knowledge Graph (academic standards across all 50 US states + curricula from Illustrative Mathematics, OpenSciEd, EL Education) plus connectors to Coteach, Brisk Teaching, Eedi, MagicSchool, Diffit. (3) Claude Cowork with scheduled tasks - Claude drafts the weekly parent newsletter from lesson plans, updates resource folders, and generates reminders on its own.

Student data protection is designed in from the ground up, not bolted on later. FERPA-aligned Terms of Service and a separate Data Processing Agreement for US K-12 (documents: anthropic.com/legal/k12-terms, anthropic.com/legal/k12-dpa) define an SLA for deleting conversations containing student data. Zero training - teacher conversation data is NOT used to train Anthropic models (opt-in is not even offered for verified teacher accounts). The standard, developed together with the American Federation of Teachers, is known as the AFT Gold Standard - Randi Weingarten (AFT President) publicly endorsed the approach as 'industry best practices for safety and privacy in K-12 education'.

Additional educational programs: AI Fluency for PK-12 Educators (a course co-created with Teach for America) and a train-the-trainer module co-created with the American Federation of Teachers. Both are model-agnostic (teach working with any LLM, not just Claude), practical, and cover responsible AI use with students in mind. Available at anthropic.skilljar.com. A complement to the teacher beyond the tool itself - Anthropic positions itself as an educational partner for K-12 systems, not just a chatbot vendor.

Limitations and roadmap: the program is US-only (outside the US, teachers can use standard Claude without special privileges); available to individual teachers, not to schools and districts. Anthropic announced that a dedicated offering for schools and districts is 'coming soon' - meanwhile schools can use Claude for Nonprofits. The program competes directly with ChatGPT for Teachers (OpenAI + American Federation of Teachers, announced July 2025 with a USD 500K commitment to train 400,000 teachers), MagicSchool AI ($4.5M+ users in 2025), Google Classroom AI (Gemini for Education). Claude's differentiator: a combination of model quality (Sonnet 4.5 / Opus), grounding in curricula (Learning Commons), and hard privacy guarantees (AFT Gold Standard).
