Devin

Devin is an autonomous AI agent — an “AI software engineer” — developed by Cognition (Cognition Labs). Unveiled on 12 March 2024 as the first fully autonomous coding agent, it can independently plan and carry out complex engineering tasks: writing and debugging code, running commands, browsing the web and deploying applications, using its own sandbox with a shell, code editor and browser.

Given a natural-language prompt, Devin produces a plan and then executes it iteratively, adapting to user feedback. Devin 2.0, released on 3 April 2025, introduced running multiple parallel Devin instances (each with its own interactive cloud IDE), interactive planning, Devin Search (agentic codebase understanding) and Devin Wiki (automatic repository documentation).

Devin is available primarily as a web app (app.devin.ai), as well as through integrations (including Slack) and an API. Pricing starts at $20 per month, with usage billed in agent compute units (ACUs); team and enterprise plans are also available.

Cognition, founded by Scott Wu (CEO) and backed by investors including Founders Fund, positions Devin as a tool for autonomously handling software engineering tasks — from small fixes to entire features — working in parallel alongside engineering teams.
