Gboard is a mobile on-screen keyboard developed by Google LLC, available on Android and iOS. It launched on iOS on 12 May 2016 and, in December 2016, replaced the earlier Google Keyboard app on Android. The app is free.
AI features
Gboard combines standard keyboard typing with AI-powered features: glide typing, voice typing, next-word prediction, grammar and spelling correction, and on-the-fly translation via Google Translate integration. It also supports handwriting recognition and search for GIFs, emoji and stickers, including emoji mash-ups in the Emoji Kitchen feature.
Generative models
In September 2023 Google introduced Proofread in Gboard for generative text correction, and in 2025 broader AI writing tools for adjusting tone, grammar and conciseness. On Pixel 8 Pro devices, the Gemini Nano model began powering Smart Reply as a developer preview.
Availability
The Android version is actively developed and supports hundreds of languages (over 900 as of 2019). The iOS version remains available on the App Store but has not been updated since May 2022 and supports 78 languages. By April 2025 the app had surpassed 10 billion downloads on Google Play.
