GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot is an AI system created by GitHub (a Microsoft subsidiary) that supports developers across the entire software development lifecycle. The system offers real-time code completion (inline suggestions), contextual chat in the IDE and on GitHub.com, an agentic mode (agent mode), an autonomous cloud agent (Copilot cloud agent), code reviews (Copilot code review) and a command-line interface (Copilot CLI).

Copilot is available as an extension for Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Neovim, Eclipse, Xcode and Zed editors, and is natively integrated with GitHub.com, GitHub Mobile, GitHub CLI and Windows Terminal. The system supports multiple language models from various providers (Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, xAI), letting users pick the model depending on their plan. Copilot integrates with MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers and offers features such as Copilot Spaces, custom instructions, prompt files, agent skills, custom agents and Copilot Memory.

The system is offered in the following plans: Free, Pro ($10/user/month), Pro+ ($39/user/month), Business ($19/user/month) and Enterprise ($39/user/month). The Business and Enterprise plans add license management, organization-level policies, IP indemnity, audit logs, SAML SSO and exclusion of customer data from model training. GitHub Copilot Enterprise additionally integrates natively with GitHub.com and supports indexing of organization repositories.

GitHub Copilot Business and Enterprise do not use customer data to train models. SAML SSO, audit logs, IP indemnity, access policy management, file exclusions and a Data Protection Agreement (DPA) supporting GDPR are available. The public code (code referencing) filter detects and blocks suggestions that match public code on GitHub.

Data of individual users (Free/Pro/Pro+) may be used to train models (since April 24, 2025), with an opt-out option in settings. Business and Enterprise data are never used for training. For IDE chat / code completions on Business/Enterprise, prompts and suggestions are not retained; for other access types retention is 28 days.
