Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is a team communication and collaboration platform developed by Microsoft and launched worldwide on 14 March 2017. It combines persistent chat, video meetings, voice and telephone calls, file storage and sharing, and integration with Microsoft 365 apps and thousands of third-party tools. Over time it replaced products such as Skype for Business.

The AI layer (Copilot)

The built-in Microsoft 365 Copilot assistant brings AI features to Teams: meeting summaries and intelligent recap, action-item lists, transcription and live captions, translation, answering questions about a meeting, and summaries of chats and files. Organizations can build their own agents in Copilot Studio and run them inside Teams. Copilot is based on the GPT-4 / GPT-4o model family.

Availability and access models

Teams runs in the browser and as a desktop and mobile app on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, and programmatically via Microsoft Graph and the Bot Framework. It is available as a free tier and within Microsoft 365 business and enterprise subscriptions; Copilot features require a Microsoft 365 Copilot (add-on) license.
