OpenCode

OpenCode is an open-source AI coding agent (MIT license) designed to assist with writing code. It runs as a terminal interface (TUI), a desktop application (macOS, Windows, Linux — built with Tauri), and an IDE extension (VS Code). The creator and operator is Anomaly (formerly SST/Serverless Stack), founded by Jay Shah and Frank Wang, Y Combinator alumni.

The system is provider-agnostic by design, supporting over 75 model providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, AWS Bedrock, Azure OpenAI, Groq, xAI, GitHub Copilot, GitLab Duo, Ollama (local models), LM Studio, and many others. Users supply their own API keys or use OpenCode Zen (curated pay-as-you-go models) or OpenCode Go (a $10/month subscription providing access to open-source models: DeepSeek, Kimi K2, Qwen3, MiMo, MiniMax, GLM). Code, session context, and API keys are not stored on OpenCode servers — keys are saved locally on the user's device.

The agent's built-in tools include: bash (shell command execution), edit (file editing via string replacement), write (file creation), read (file reading), grep (regex content search), glob (pattern-based file search), apply_patch (applying patches), lsp (Language Server Protocol integration for 20+ languages), webfetch (URL content retrieval), websearch (web search), skill, and todowrite. The system supports MCP (Model Context Protocol) for external integrations and ACP (Agent Communication Protocol). Two operating modes are available: Plan (analysis without file modifications) and Build (full tool access). A client-server architecture enables remote agent control.

OpenCode supports multiple parallel sessions, session sharing via public link (opncd.ai/s/<id>), GitHub and GitLab integration, custom commands, visual themes, configurable keyboard shortcuts, and code formatters. A developer SDK is available for building custom integrations and plugins. As of April 2026, the project had reached approximately 150,000 GitHub stars and serves over 6.5 million developers per month.

Notes

Upd. 27 Apr 2026

Sharing sessions via link (Share feature) requires explicit user action (manual mode is default; auto-share is optional and can be disabled). Shared sessions are publicly accessible to anyone with the link and stored on OpenCode servers. The Enterprise tier provides full cost and usage tracking through an internal AI gateway.
