Talk to Spotify

Talk to Spotify is a conversational AI assistant integrated directly into the Spotify app on iOS and Android. Announced on July 14, 2026 on the official Spotify Newsroom, the feature is the next step in the AI-native listening strategy that began with AI DJ (2023) and daylist (2024). Users can press the microphone button (voice input) or type in the Home or Now Playing view to hold a two-way conversation with the assistant - control playback, learn more about what is playing, revisit their listening history, go deeper on podcasts and audiobooks - all without leaving the Spotify app.

Four main use cases (per Spotify's publication): (1) Soundtrack any moment - conversational playback control such as 'Play some artists I haven't heard before', then iterative 'Add some Bad Bunny', 'just his recent stuff', 'make it more upbeat'. Meta-actions like 'save this song', 'add this to my queue', 'follow this artist' work with natural-language commands. (2) Understand what's playing - from the Now Playing view, contextual questions about the current track: 'What is the inspiration behind Dua Lipa's Radical Optimism?', 'When was this album released?', 'What genre is this?'. The system routes the user to related artists, sounds, and creative-process stories. Extends to podcasts and audiobooks: 'What other books has this author written?', 'What other podcasts has this guest been on?'.

(3) Explore your listening - a unique use case enabled by the fact that Spotify has full visibility into the user's playlists, favourite artists, replays and history. Questions like 'When did I first listen to this song?', 'What genres have I been into recently?' let a user rediscover their own music history as an organised document. (4) Personal, useful listening - Talk to Spotify positions itself as a complement to traditional listening, not a replacement. 'Use it your way: press the mic button to talk, type instead, or keep listening like you always have' - Spotify explicitly preserves user choice, avoiding a forced voice-first paradigm (as Amazon did with Alexa+ in 2024, which received mixed reviews).

Limitations and rollout: the feature is in BETA status (since July 14, 2026), available exclusively: (a) to eligible Premium subscribers (not all Premium users - gradual rollout), (b) aged 18+ (legal barrier for voice AI with minors), (c) only in the US, Ireland and Sweden (test markets - US as the largest, Ireland as Spotify's European HQ for the EU, Sweden as home country), (d) only on iOS and Android (no web player, no desktop app), (e) in English only.
