VS Code

Visual Studio Code (VS Code) is a free, open-source code editor developed by Microsoft, available on Windows, macOS and Linux as well as in the browser. Its first release was on 29 April 2015.

In the AI context, VS Code is an environment with a built-in AI layer powered by GitHub Copilot. It provides code completions, next edit suggestions, chat (including inline chat) and an agent mode that autonomously searches the code, makes changes and runs tests in the same workspace as the editor, terminal and debugger.

The language model can be chosen from the providers available in the GitHub Copilot plan (including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google) or a local model can be connected. VS Code supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP), tool extensions, and approval modes and a sandbox that constrain agent actions.
