Weather Lab

Weather Lab is an interactive website launched by Google DeepMind and Google Research to share and explore experimental AI weather models. It focuses in particular on tropical cyclone forecasting: it shows their formation, track, intensity, size and shape.

The experimental cyclone model generates up to 50 possible scenarios up to 15 days ahead, across all ocean basins. According to internal evaluations (2023-2024 test data, North Atlantic and East Pacific), the 5-day track prediction was on average about 140 km more accurate than leading physics-based models — roughly a 1.5-day improvement in forecast skill.

Google collaborates on Weather Lab with the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NOAA/NHC), which views the experimental predictions alongside conventional physics-based models to validate them. Forecasts in Weather Lab are experimental and come from models still under development — they are not official warnings; for official forecasts consult your local meteorological agency.

Weather Lab was made publicly available on June 12, 2025 as a free tool for exploration and evaluation. It is associated with the WeatherNext family of models developed by Google DeepMind and Google Research.
