Windsurf

Windsurf is an agentic IDE built on a fork of Visual Studio Code. It launched in November 2024 as Windsurf Editor — the next-generation product from Codeium (now Cognition). In June 2026 the product was renamed to Devin Desktop, remaining the same IDE — with settings, extensions and subscription plans preserved.

The core workflow in Windsurf is Cascade — an agent that performs multi-step tasks across the whole repository. Cascade edits files, runs shell commands and tests, observes results, and iteratively drives tasks to completion; it shows a diff for approval before writing.

Cascade is complemented by next-generation IDE features: Supercomplete (predicts your next edit, not just the next token), Fast Context (sub-second retrieval from an indexed codebase), and Tab (inline autocomplete on the SWE-1.6 model, available without limits).

After Cognition's acquisition of Windsurf and the rebrand to Devin Desktop, the IDE gained an Agent Command Center — a Kanban surface managing a fleet of agents (local and Devin Cloud). The open Agent Client Protocol (ACP) allows Devin, Codex, Claude Agent, OpenCode and Cascade agents to run side by side, sharing context via Spaces (isolated worktrees).

Windsurf integrates natively with OpenAI, Anthropic Claude and Google Gemini models as well as its own SWE family (SWE-1.6, SWE-1.7). It supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and integrates with Slack, Linear, Jira, GitHub, GitLab, Notion, Figma, Sentry, Vercel, Datadog and Atlassian.
