Use cases
Powering AI server racks (e.g. NVIDIA reference racks)Electric vehiclesDense data centers and power infrastructure
How it works
Raising the distribution voltage to 800 V DC lowers the current for the same power, reducing resistive losses (proportional to the square of current) and allowing thinner conductors; this requires converters (e.g. SSTs) to supply and stabilize the 800 V DC.
Problem solved
How to deliver very high power to dense loads (AI racks) with limited losses, heat and conductor size?
Strengths & limitations
Strengths
✓Lower losses when delivering high power
✓Thinner conductors and higher power density
✓Better efficiency for DC loads (GPUs)
Limitations
✗Requires new infrastructure and converters
✗High-voltage DC safety challenges
✗DC arc protection and interruption harder than AC
