Living components (muscle cells, tissues, microorganisms or organisms) are cultured or mounted on an artificial scaffold and coupled with control systems. Electrical, chemical or optical signals stimulate the biological component to produce motion or a response, and sensors close the control loop.
Conventional robots face limits in miniaturization, energy efficiency, self-repair and biocompatibility that are hard to overcome with purely artificial materials.
