iFACTORY
How it works
iFACTORY organises production around the three pillars and a set of digital technologies. In AI, the AIQX quality platform analyses sensor and camera data along the line in real time, detecting errors and giving feedback to workers. The "virtual factory" relies on digital twins created for all 30+ plants using laser scanning and industrial 3D Metaverse applications, letting plants be planned and tested virtually before they are built physically (as in Debrecen). Process optimisation is supported by projects such as IPS-i (a central positional-data database, tool recognition, component verification) and the globally standardised, cloud-based Shopfloor.Digital platform. Logistics uses Industry 4.0 solutions — autonomous transport systems and robots. The Green pillar is delivered through renewable energy and the circular economy.
Problem solved
The transformation of the automotive industry — the shift to electromobility, pressure to cut emissions and resource use, and growing production complexity — demands plants that are simultaneously cost-efficient, climate-neutral and fully digital. iFACTORY addresses this by providing a single, repeatable production standard deployable in both greenfield and existing, retrofitted plants.
Components
The efficiency pillar: lean, high-precision and flexible production processes that maximise output with minimal waste.
The sustainability pillar: resource-saving production based on the circular economy, renewable energy and CO2 reduction.
The digitalisation pillar: using data science, AI, digital twins and the industrial 3D Metaverse to plan, control and optimise production.
Evolution
BMW Group presents iFACTORY as a holistic strategy for the production of the future built on the Lean, Green and Digital pillars.
Plant Debrecen — the first plant planned fully virtually and realised entirely according to iFACTORY principles — begins series production of the BMW iX3, the first Neue Klasse vehicle, running entirely on renewable electricity.
