How it works

The paradigm does not define a single architecture but combines known technical mechanisms: persistent long-term memory (storing and recalling facts about the user, often via vector databases and retrieval), personalization of responses based on a user profile, data, and preferences, multi-turn context-preserving dialogue, and fine-tuning the base model for a desired tone and behavior (e.g. empathy, emotional safety). In Inflection's implementation, Pi is built on the company's own foundation models. Because "Personal Intelligence" is a product framing, the concrete mechanisms vary across deployments and are not standardized.

Problem solved

General-purpose, stateless chatbots treat each conversation from scratch, lack knowledge of a user's history, data, and preferences, and build no relationship over time. The personal-AI paradigm addresses the absence of continuity, personalization, and user context across sessions.
