Key
innovation
The sense of self-movement, force and body position — in robotics, a system's ability to sense the configuration of its own body without constant external feedback (e.g. vision).

Use cases
Legged robot locomotion (balance)Force-feedback manipulationStabilization against perturbationsMotion control without continuous vision
How it works
Proprioceptive sensors (joint encoders, torque/force sensors, IMUs) provide real-time data about the robot's body state; these are integrated in the control loop with other modalities to maintain balance, stabilize against perturbations and correct motion trajectories.
Problem solved
Robots need knowledge of their own body configuration (joint positions, forces, loads) to move and manipulate stably without relying solely on vision or external sensors.
Key mechanisms
Joint position encoders
Torque and force sensors
Inertial measurement units (IMU)
Sensory integration in the control loop
Strengths & limitations
Strengths
✓Body awareness without dependence on vision
✓Fast feedback for stabilization and balance
✓Robustness under limited visibility
Limitations
✗Provides no information about the environment (only the own body)
✗Susceptible to sensor drift and noise
✗Requires calibration and fusion with other modalities
