How it works

An RTOS uses deterministic priority-based scheduling (often preemptive), minimizes and bounds interrupt latency, and provides synchronization mechanisms that avoid priority inversion, guaranteeing that critical tasks meet their deadlines.

Problem solved

How to ensure critical tasks (e.g. a robot control loop) always execute within a strictly bounded time?

Strengths & limitations

Strengths
✓Deterministic, predictable response times
✓Low and bounded jitter
✓Reliability in critical applications
Limitations
✗Usually lower overall throughput than general-purpose OSes
✗Greater design and analysis complexity
✗Limited resources on embedded platforms
