How it works
During manufacturing, the silicon-steel grains are textured (oriented) along the rolling direction, so magnetic domains switch more easily in that direction; cores are built so the magnetic field runs along the grain orientation, minimizing losses.
Problem solved
How to reduce energy losses in transformer cores and increase their efficiency?
Strengths & limitations
Strengths
✓Low magnetic losses in the working direction
✓High transformer efficiency
✓Proven, mature material
Limitations
✗Anisotropic properties (best only in one direction)
✗Complex, costly manufacturing
✗Limited supply amid rising demand
