How it works

An SST converts power in several stages using power semiconductors: high-frequency rectification/inversion, a high-frequency transformer (isolation and voltage change) and active output control, allowing precise regulation of voltage and bidirectional power flow.

Problem solved

How to power dense, fast-growing loads (e.g. 800 V DC AI racks) more efficiently, flexibly and compactly than a conventional transformer allows?

Strengths & limitations

Strengths
✓Smaller and lighter than a 50/60 Hz transformer
✓Active control of voltage and power quality
✓Bidirectional power flow and AC/DC conversion
Limitations
✗Higher cost and complexity than a passive transformer
✗Dependence on advanced power semiconductors
✗Newer technology — less field-proven
