Personalizing voice assistantsDubbing and content localizationRestoring voices for people who have lost them
How it works
A model learns a representation of the voice's timbre and traits from samples (a speaker encoder), and then a text-to-speech system generates speech conditioned on that representation, reproducing the person's sound for arbitrary text.
Problem solved
How to generate natural speech in a specific person's voice from only a few recorded samples?
Strengths & limitations
Strengths
✓Natural, personalized voices
✓Works from few samples (few-shot)
✓Broad applications in media and accessibility
Limitations
✗Serious abuse risk (deepfakes, fraud)
✗Consent and voice-rights issues
✗Need for detection and watermarking of synthetic speech
