IBM z17 is the latest generation of mainframe servers in the IBM Z family, announced on 8 April 2025. The system (machine type 9175) is built on the IBM Telum II processor clocked at 5.5 GHz and scales, in its multi-frame (ME1) configuration, up to 208 processor units (engines), 64 TB of memory, 4 CPC drawers and 12 I/O drawers across 4 frames.
A defining feature of z17 is AI acceleration. The Telum II processor integrates a low-latency, on-chip AI coprocessor for in-transaction inferencing, supporting small language models (SLMs) with fewer than 8 billion parameters, plus a new data processing unit (DPU) that accelerates input/output operations. It is complemented by the IBM Spyre Accelerator (PCIe) card — in technology preview at announcement — of which up to 48 can be installed to scale generative AI and larger models.
According to IBM, z17 can process up to 450 billion inference operations per day at a 1 ms response time and delivers 99.999999% availability (eight nines). The system also introduces quantum-safe cryptography based on NIST-standardized algorithms and supports the IBM z/OS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Linux on IBM Z operating systems.
