8VC is an American venture capital firm founded in 2015 by Joe Lonsdale and Jake Medwell. It emerged after the breakup of Formation 8, with 15 of its 25 employees moving to 8VC. The name references the “Traitorous Eight” — the eight engineers who left Shockley Semiconductor in 1957 to found Fairchild Semiconductor. Originally called “8 Partners” and based in San Francisco, the firm relocated its headquarters to Austin, Texas in 2020 while keeping a San Francisco office. 8VC invests in technology companies across IT infrastructure, biology and biotech, healthcare, government & defense, and logistics. Its portfolio includes Anduril, Flexport, Ramp, Vercel, Epirus, Saronic and Addepar. As of 2023, its assets under management (AUM) were approximately US$6 billion.
