Advisory committee convened by Google DeepMind, uniting Deaf advocacy organizations, academic institutions and interpreters to guide sign-language AI development.
The AI Sign Language Advisory Committee (AISLAC) is an advisory body established by Google DeepMind to anchor sign-language AI research in the institutional expertise and lived experiences of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. It brings together leaders from Deaf advocacy organizations, academic and cultural institutions, and professional sign-language interpreters. Represented organizations include the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), the Rochester Institute of Technology / National Technical Institute for the Deaf (RIT/NTID) and the Deaf Professional Arts Network (DPAN), alongside independent subject-matter experts. AISLAC's external engagements are managed by two facilitators from Google's Accessibility organization who operate independently of Google DeepMind's and Android's research and engineering teams. The committee works under an AISLAC Governance Charter and triages reported issues into priority bands (P0/P1). AISLAC co-authored the 'AISLAC Joint Impact Report for SL2T 1.0', evaluating the American Sign Language (ASL)-to-text translation model (SL2T 1.0) deployed in Gboard and Live Transcribe. It was publicly announced on 12 August 2026.
