Chinese technology and e-commerce conglomerate based in Hangzhou, owner of Alibaba Cloud (Aliyun), DAMO Academy, and the Qwen / Tongyi Qianwen open-language-model family.
Alibaba Group Holding Limited is a Chinese technology conglomerate founded in 1999 in Hangzhou by Jack Ma and 17 co-founders. Originally a B2B platform (Alibaba.com), it has grown to include consumer e-commerce (Taobao, Tmall, AliExpress, Lazada), payments (Alipay → Ant Group), logistics (Cainiao), media and entertainment, and — crucially for AI — Alibaba Cloud and DAMO Academy.
In AI, Alibaba is one of the four major Chinese "dragons" alongside Tencent, Baidu, and ByteDance. DAMO Academy (since 2017) conducts research in: large language models (the Qwen / Tongyi Qianwen family — from Qwen 1 in 2023 to Qwen3 and QwQ-32B in 2024–2025), multimodal models (Qwen-VL, Qwen-Audio), reasoning models (QwQ), code models (Qwen-Coder), generative image models (Qwen-Image / Wan), autonomous systems, and medical AI. Qwen models are released as open-source under Apache 2.0 / Tongyi Qianwen License, making Alibaba a key player in the open LLM scene alongside Meta and Mistral.
Alibaba Cloud (Aliyun) is the fourth-largest cloud provider globally and the leader in China, hosting both public Qwen models and private enterprise deployments. The chip subsidiary T-Head (Pingtouge) designs proprietary AI accelerators (Hanguang 800), ARM CPUs (Yitian 710), and the XuanTie RISC-V architecture. The entire group employs ~200,000 people and is listed on the NYSE (BABA) and HKEX (9988).
