Amazon Robotics LLC is Amazon’s division responsible for designing, building and deploying robots and automation systems across the company’s fulfillment centers. It grew out of Kiva Systems (founded in 2003 by Mick Mountz, Peter Wurman and Raffaello D’Andrea), which Amazon acquired in 2012 for about US$775 million; the unit was renamed Amazon Robotics in 2015. Its main R&D hub is in Westborough, Massachusetts. Its portfolio includes mobile drive-unit robots (Hercules, Titan), the autonomous Proteus robot, manipulation and sortation arms (Sparrow, Cardinal, Robin, Vulcan), the containerized Sequoia system, and the DeepFleet AI foundation model that coordinates the fleet. Amazon has stated its deployed robot count has surpassed one million units.
