AMD
ACTIVEAmerican designer of x86 processors (Ryzen, EPYC), graphics cards (Radeon, Instinct) and FPGAs / adaptive SoCs (following the 2022 Xilinx acquisition). One of the two main x86 CPU suppliers alongside Intel and a key competitor to NVIDIA in AI accelerators.
AMD
Founded 1969 · Santa Clara, United StatesAMD (Advanced Micro Devices) is an American semiconductor company headquartered in Santa Clara, California, founded in 1969 by Jerry Sanders and seven engineers leaving Fairchild Semiconductor. For most of its history AMD has been one of the two licensed x86 CPU vendors alongside Intel. Following the 2006 acquisition of ATI Technologies, the company also became a major GPU designer under the Radeon brand. The strategic turnaround came with the Zen architecture and the Ryzen line (2017), which restored its CPU competitiveness with Intel. EPYC server CPUs have since captured significant share at hyperscalers and in supercomputing — including the Frontier and El Capitan systems, the first exascale machines built around AMD CPUs and GPUs.
In 2022 AMD closed the acquisition of Xilinx for approximately USD 49 B, adding FPGAs and the Versal family of adaptive SoCs to its portfolio. The same year saw the acquisition of Pensando Systems (DPUs), and in 2025 the acquisition of ZT Systems, a builder of integrated data-center systems. The Instinct accelerator line (MI250, MI300, MI325, MI350) and the open ROCm software platform position AMD as the primary competitor to NVIDIA in the data-center AI accelerator market.
