American Airlines, Inc. is the world's largest airline by passengers carried and daily flights, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. Its parent company is American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ: AAL). The airline was founded in 1930 (as American Airways, from a consolidation of over 80 smaller carriers), and in 2013 merged with US Airways to create the world's largest carrier. Its CEO is Robert Isom (since March 2022), and its chairman is Greg Smith. American operates a fleet of about 1,030 aircraft (the second-largest commercial fleet in the world), serves 353 destinations worldwide and operates nearly 6,800 flights daily, carrying over 200 million passengers a year; it employs about 103,440 people (2024). 2024 revenue was about $49.6B. Major hubs include Dallas/Fort Worth (the largest), Charlotte, Chicago-O'Hare, Miami and Philadelphia; its loyalty program is AAdvantage, and American is a founding member of the Oneworld alliance. On the technology side, the airline - like most large carriers - uses artificial intelligence and machine learning for operations and network optimization, customer service (chatbots/assistants), personalization and predictive fleet maintenance, among others.
