Axios
Founded 2016 · Arlington, United StatesAxios is an American news outlet founded in 2016 by Jim VandeHei, Mike Allen and Roy Schwartz — former Politico journalists. The site launched in 2017 and became known for brief, concise stories (usually under 300 words, with bullet points) and for industry newsletters written in its "Smart Brevity" style. The company is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. Its business model relies on native advertising, paid subscriptions (Axios Pro), newsletters (including Axios Local) and events. In August 2022, Axios was sold to Cox Enterprises for USD 525 million; Cox took a 70% stake, while founders and employees retained the remaining 30%. As part of the deal, Axios HQ was spun out as a separate software company. The company employed about 500 people in 2022 and cut roughly 50 jobs (about 10% of staff) in August 2024.
