The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is the national academy for natural sciences of the People's Republic of China, established on 1 November 1949 and headquartered in Beijing. It is a public institution under the State Council, serving as the country's highest advisory body for science and technology and its largest base for basic research. CAS comprises over 100 research institutes and two universities: the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS). It employs around 71,300 staff and trains tens of thousands of graduate students. It has ranked first worldwide in the Nature Index since 2014. Its institutes originated technologies such as the Loongson CPUs (Institute of Computing Technology) and commercial enterprises including Lenovo (via Legend Holdings).
