The company's goal is to create systems that automate the full scientific experiment loop - proposing experiments, implementing them, evaluating results and iterating - at a scale and speed exceeding sequential human effort, so that 'AI closes every research loop itself'. Initially the company focuses on automating machine-learning research and engineering, with plans to expand into chip design, biology, drug discovery and materials science. The company's launch was announced on August 5, 2026. Discovery Loop was co-founded by four Google AI veterans: Jeff Dean (former Chief Scientist of Google), Sanjay Ghemawat (Google Senior Fellow), Oriol Vinyals (VP of Research at Google DeepMind, technical lead of Gemini) and Quoc Le (co-founder of Google Brain). Its founding investor and Cloud partner is Alphabet (Google), which also supplies compute for the first year; investors also include Khosla Ventures and Radical Ventures (funding amount and valuation undisclosed). The company is building a lean, in-person founding team.
