Element Labs

Element Labs, Inc. is a New York-based software startup and the maker of LM Studio — a desktop application (macOS, Windows, Linux) for running large language models (LLMs) locally on a user's own computer. LM Studio lets users download and run open models in GGUF (via llama.cpp) and MLX (on Apple hardware) formats, exposes a local OpenAI-compatible API server, and ships SDKs (lmstudio-python, lmstudio-js), a command-line interface (lms) and the LM Studio Hub model repository. The company also develops Bionic, an agentic AI app that runs on local and cloud models. The desktop app is free for both home and work use (since July 2025), and the company monetizes through paid Bionic plans and an enterprise offering. Element Labs was founded in 2023 by Yagil Burowski; the team is small (2–10 people per LinkedIn). NOTE: this is a different company from the Israeli semiconductor startup of the same name — this document describes the maker of LM Studio.
