ELLIS (European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems, legally ELLIS Society e.V.) is a pan-European research network centred on machine learning as the foundation of modern artificial intelligence. It was established on 6 December 2018 at the NeurIPS conference, following an April 2018 open letter to European governments, to strengthen Europe competitiveness in AI research relative to the US and China. The organisation federates a network of ELLIS Units, institutes and research programs distributed across more than a dozen countries and runs a pan-European PhD & Postdoc Program. Its registered office is in Tübingen (Max-Planck-Ring 4).
