GovAI

GovAI (Centre for the Governance of AI) is a nonprofit research organization focused on the governance, policy, and safety of advanced artificial intelligence. It was founded in 2016 at Yale University by Allan Dafoe, became an academic center at the University of Oxford in 2018, and has operated as an independent nonprofit since 2021. It produces rigorous research and fosters talent to help decision-makers in government and industry navigate the transition to a world with advanced AI. Research areas include technical AI governance, the economics of AI, threat modeling, and AI agent infrastructure policy. The organization is registered as a 501(c)(3) in the USA (EIN 99-4000294) with a UK subsidiary, and maintains offices in London and Washington, DC. Its current Director is Ben Garfinkel.
