The group traces its origins to 1865, when Thomas Sutherland founded The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in Hong Kong; the current holding company, HSBC Holdings plc, was established in 1991. HSBC operates in around 57 countries and territories across six continents, providing retail, commercial and investment banking, wealth management and insurance.
