Institute for Advanced Study

The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) is a private, independent center for basic research located in Princeton, New Jersey, founded in 1930 by Abraham Flexner together with philanthropists Louis Bamberger and Caroline Bamberger Fuld. The Institute has no students and grants no degrees; its mission is to support the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake. It is organized into four schools: Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Historical Studies and Social Science. It employs about 25 permanent faculty and hosts roughly 190 visiting members each year from more than 100 institutions worldwide. Scholars associated with the Institute include Albert Einstein, J. Robert Oppenheimer, John von Neumann, Kurt Gödel and Emmy Noether.
