The Institute for Law & AI (LawAI) is an independent, non-partisan think tank that researches and advises on the legal challenges posed by artificial intelligence. The organization traces its roots to the Legal Priorities Project, launched in 2019 at Harvard Law School by Christoph Winter and Eric Martínez (with the help of Cullen O'Keefe and Jonas Freund), and adopted its current name after rebranding around 2023–2024. LawAI operates through three specialized teams — US Law and Policy, EU Law, and Legal Frontiers — working on areas such as EU AI Act implementation, the concept of "Law-Following AI," and compute thresholds for AI governance. The institute is registered in Boston, Massachusetts, with two primary operational hubs in Washington, D.C., and Cambridge, UK. It is led by Director Christoph Winter, with Cullen O'Keefe (previously OpenAI) as Director of Research and Mackenzie Arnold as Director of US Policy.
