io (io Products, Inc.) is an American AI-hardware startup co-founded in 2024 by Jony Ive (Apple's former design chief) together with Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey and Tang Tan. The company was created in partnership with Sam Altman (OpenAI) and worked on a new category of consumer AI device - described as a 'third core device' alongside the computer and phone. io is closely tied to Jony Ive's design studio LoveFrom, which leads the venture's design. The specific product remains in development and its details have not been publicly disclosed. In May 2025, OpenAI announced the acquisition of io in an all-equity transaction worth about $6.5B (finalized in July 2025), making io OpenAI's hardware arm. Jony Ive and LoveFrom remain independent while taking on broad design and creative responsibilities across OpenAI.
