The firm was founded in 1972 by Eugene Kleiner, Tom Perkins, Frank Caufield and Brook Byers. Kleiner Perkins invests at early and growth stages in technology and life-sciences companies, with current focus areas spanning consumer, enterprise, hard tech and fintech, and a growing emphasis on artificial intelligence (in 2026 the firm earmarked $3.5B for AI-related investments). The firm is chaired by John Doerr, with managing partners including Mamoon Hamid and Ilya Fushman. Since inception Kleiner Perkins has backed more than 900 technology and life-sciences companies; its historic successes include investments in Google ($12M in 1999), Amazon, Genentech, Twitter, Uber and many others. According to available data the firm manages roughly $21B in assets (2026) and by 2024 had raised 21 venture funds and six growth funds.
