Microsoft AI (MAI) is Microsoft's consumer artificial intelligence division, established in March 2024 after Microsoft hired most of the team from the startup Inflection AI. Led by Mustafa Suleyman — co-founder of DeepMind and Inflection AI — the division is responsible for developing and advancing Microsoft's consumer AI products, including the Copilot assistant, the Bing search engine, the Edge browser and the MSN portal. Microsoft AI also builds its own MAI family of models (including MAI-1-preview and MAI-Voice-1), aiming to reduce dependence on OpenAI models. The division's mission is to build "humanist superintelligence" — advanced AI systems that remain controllable, aligned with human values and useful for the everyday problems of people and businesses. The team operates from hubs in Mountain View, Redmond, New York, London, Zurich and Paris.
