NIO Inc. is a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Shanghai, founded in November 2014 by William Li (originally as NextEV). The company designs and sells electric vehicles — sedans and SUVs — and has expanded into further products and services, including in-house chip development, a smartphone (NIO Phone) and power solutions such as its battery-swap network (Battery-as-a-Service). NIO also develops autonomous driving systems. It operates the NIO, Onvo and Firefly brands. It is listed on the NYSE (NIO), Hong Kong (9866) and Singapore (SGX: NIO) exchanges. In 2024 it employed 32,820 people. Founder William Li serves as chairman and CEO.
