Northwestern Medicine is a nonprofit (501(c)(3)) academic health system affiliated with Northwestern University, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. The legal entity is Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, and "Northwestern Medicine" is a registered trademark. The system was formed in 2009 through an affiliation agreement between Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Lake Forest Hospital, and comprises 11 hospitals plus hundreds of outpatient locations across the Chicago area and northern Illinois.
Its flagship is Northwestern Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago, the primary teaching affiliate of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. The system works with more than 5,400 physicians. Hospital-based research funding topped $484 million (2018). Northwestern Medicine maintains close associations with Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (formerly the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago).
