Founded 2015 · San Diego, United StatesPsyonic, Inc. (brand: PSYONIC) is an American startup headquartered in San Diego, California, founded in 2015 by Aadeel Akhtar (CEO; Ph.D. in Neuroscience and M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign). The company designs and manufactures advanced bionic prosthetic hands.
Its flagship product, the Ability Hand™, is the fastest bionic hand on the market (closing in 200 ms) and the first to feature multi-touch feedback — pressure sensors in the fingertips that transmit vibrations to the residual limb. The hand weighs approximately 490 g, is waterproof, charges via USB-C, and is manufactured in the USA from rubber and silicone, providing impact resistance. It is covered by Medicare in the United States.
PSYONIC operates across two markets: prosthetics for amputees and hands for humanoid robots, with partners and customers including Apptronik Apollo, NASA, and Meta. In February 2024, the company appeared on Shark Tank (Season 15), receiving an offer of $1 million for a 6% equity stake from Lori Greiner, Daymond John, and Kevin O'Leary, implying a $50 million valuation. In 2024, the company raised approximately $4.1 million in a crowdfunding round. Total financing — equity and grants combined — has exceeded $10 million. As of June 2025, the company employed more than 30 people.
