Redwood Research

Redwood Research is a US nonprofit organization (a registered 501(c)(3)) based in Berkeley, California, founded in 2021. It conducts research on the safety and security of advanced artificial intelligence systems, focusing on assessing and mitigating risks from powerful AI systems that might purposefully act against the interests of their developers. Its primary research area is AI Control — designing oversight protocols that remain robust even when a model tries to deceive — alongside work on strategic deception and alignment faking in large language models. The organization collaborates with Anthropic, Google DeepMind, the UK AI Safety Institute and METR, and advises governments and companies on AI misalignment risks. Buck Shlegeris serves as CEO and Ryan Greenblatt is Chief Scientist.
