Shanghai AI Laboratory (Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, 上海人工智能实验室) is a Chinese new-type artificial intelligence research institution based in Shanghai, officially inaugurated in July 2020 at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC). The lab conducts research into fundamental AI theories and core technologies, including foundation models, multimodal systems, computer vision, embodied AI, AI for science (AI4S) and AI safety and trustworthiness. It is known for extensive open-source work by teams such as OpenGVLab, InternLM, OpenCompass and OpenDataLab, including the InternLM and InternVL model families. The lab was initiated by scientist Tang Xiaoou; its current director is Zhou Bowen.
