The product originated inside Tiny Speck, a studio founded in 2009 by Stewart Butterfield, Cal Henderson, Eric Costello and Serguei Mourachov while building the game Glitch; Slack launched publicly in 2013 and the company was renamed Slack Technologies in 2014. In June 2019 it went public on the NYSE via a direct listing under the ticker WORK. On December 1, 2020 Salesforce announced it would acquire Slack for about $27.7 billion; the deal closed on July 21, 2021. Slack now operates as a subsidiary of Salesforce (Slack Technologies, LLC), developing AI features (Slack AI) and agents (Agentforce).
