Sony Music Publishing (US) LLC is an American music publisher headquartered at 25 Madison Avenue in New York City, a subsidiary of Sony Music Group (a division of Sony Group Corporation). It was formed in 1995 as Sony/ATV Music Publishing — a joint venture between Sony Corporation of America and Michael Jackson; the company traces its roots to ATV Music, founded in 1972 by Lew Grade (owner of, among others, the Lennon–McCartney/Northern Songs catalog). In 2012 a Sony/ATV-led consortium acquired EMI Music Publishing, and in 2018 Sony took full control of it. In 2021 the company was renamed Sony Music Publishing. As of end March 2025 it owned or administered over 6 million songs, making it the world's largest music publisher. Jon Platt has served as Chairman & CEO since April 2019. The company is a significant rights holder in disputes over licensing lyrics and music for training generative AI models.
