Sumitomo is one of Japan's oldest business families (zaibatsu/keiretsu). The family's history goes back to 1615, when Masatomo Sumitomo founded a publishing and bookselling firm that soon turned into a copper and silver trading business. In 1897 Sumitomo Copper Rolling Works was established — the direct ancestor of today's Sumitomo Electric Industries. The company is part of the Sumitomo Group, one of Japan's largest zaibatsu.
